Ben Crump has earned a stellar reputation for his commitment to civil rights and wrongful death cases, having helped families recover millions and fight for justice.
His tireless advocacy on behalf of clients and the community earned him national renown; Rev. Al Sharpton even coined him “Black America’s attorney general”.
Ben Crump has become widely recognized as Black America’s Attorney General. As one of the premier lawyers and media figures for police brutality cases, he has won millions for victims and their families – such as Tyre Nichols’ family in Memphis who was fatally injured while conducting a traffic stop last year.
Crump was raised by his single mother in Lumberton, North Carolina and was often relocated for better education opportunities. He attended South Plantation High School nearby before moving on to Florida State University for both college and law school studies.
After graduating law school, he worked as an associate in Tallahassee, Florida before departing with partner Daryl Parks to establish his own law firm as an independent partnership in 2017.
His current firm boasts twelve lawyers across five offices located throughout the U.S.: Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Sacramento and Tallahassee in Florida. These offices specialize in civil rights litigation as well as catastrophic injury and wrongful death lawsuits.
Crump relishes spending his free time with his family – his wife and him are proud parents to an 8-year-old daughter, as well as enjoying sports such as FSU and FAMU football.
He’s an active member of both Omega Psi Phi fraternity – which promotes social justice – and the NAACP, having learned this discipline from his great-grandmother at an early age.
Crump has dedicated his life since his twenties to fighting racial injustice and helping individuals achieve the American Dream. His ancestry provided insight into how race and economic justice intersect.
Nichols’ activism has attracted support from both major political parties; President Biden mentioned her case during his State of the Union address this week and gave her family a standing ovation as proof.
Crump has long fought against Florida’s voter ID law, being one of its prominent critics. He views it as a rollback on decades of progress that must be challenged.

Crump was successful in persuading prosecutors to press charges against Nouman Raja for killing musician Corey Jones after he broke down on a highway, with no intention of using violence to stop it. Accordingly, Raja was sentenced to 25 years of incarceration.
He represented the family of George Floyd, a Black man killed by Minneapolis police in 2020, as well as Tyree Nichols who was brutally beaten to death by Memphis officers on January 3, 2023.
Due to these and other cases, Crump has earned widespread support from members of both parties for his advocacy of social justice and police reform. As a result, juvenile boot camps were closed down by his efforts, as well as helping secure compensation for victims injured or killed due to police violence.

Crump has also gained prominence as an attorney, public speaker and author. His legal work has been featured in various media outlets; television programs “Evidence of Innocence” and “Who Killed Tupac: The Search for Justice” feature him regularly as an expert witness.
His activism was the cornerstone of many pieces of civil rights legislation, such as those dealing with excessive police force. Additionally, he played an essential role in founding the Benjamin Crump Social Justice Institute – an annual symposium focused on contemporary issues in civil rights where leaders from around the country convene.
At the core of his practice is his belief that every individual deserves justice. He takes great pleasure in representing those who may not be able to afford an attorney, by representing their cases on a contingency basis which allows him to receive one-third of any settlement awarded as compensation if successful.

Crump’s clients include Black men, women and children who have been victims of police brutality; yet he never considers himself as racist or an advocate of violence. Instead he asserts that all individuals deserve equal treatment under law.
Even as Crump has grown into an international figure, his roots remain strongly established in North Carolina. According to Genae Crump (an associate professor of sociology at Florida State), her faith and commitment to North Carolina has helped keep Crump grounded and grounded through challenges.
As such, Florida has become one of the central aspects of his life. He and his family reside in a custom-built home within an historic Black community in Tallahassee where they spend approximately seven months out of every year.
