The Office of the Attorney General serves New York City – Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island — and its suburban counties of Nassau and Suffolk. The Eastern District of New York stands out among U.S. Attorney’s offices for its groundbreaking cases that make history. This office is also responsible for upholding New York State’s open meeting law and public records and freedom of information laws, and acting as the lead agency to address issues surrounding immigration and environmental sustainability while advocating on behalf of New Yorkers.
The New York City Office is an integral component of the Attorney General’s defense, regulatory, and affirmative justice functions. Led by an Attorney in Charge and supported by Assistant Attorneys General, this office defends New York State officers, agencies, and departments against lawsuits filed in local, state and federal courts; additionally they investigate cases related to consumer fraud, civil rights abuses, charitable donations frauds and workers compensation issues among many others.

White collar crime in New York State has been on an exponential increase. To combat it, the Attorney General and District Attorney offices are working together to uncover Medicare/ Medicaid Fraud, Sales Tax Fraud and Unemployment Fraud using computer programs which cross reference Social Security Numbers with withholding taxes, payroll checks and unemployment checks to detect such crimes.
The Westchester Regional Office prosecutes federal crimes in Putnam, Rockland, Westchester, Orange, Dutchess and Sullivan Counties. Working closely with local law enforcement agencies, this office has prosecuted large-scale gang, drug, murder and public corruption cases successfully.

The Criminal Division addresses threats to public safety in its region, from attempts to disrupt and dismantle violent street gangs to prosecution of major drug trafficking organizations. Prosecutors also target predators using computers for criminal purposes – such as identity theft and financial fraud as well as those spreading child pornography – while working hard to ensure victims are treated with dignity and kept informed throughout their legal processes.
